![]() ![]() While many would set up at a campsite for days, which would be fine, I also saw a unit that really lends itself to road trips. An indoor/outdoor table can be set up where needed, rain or shine.Īs I was walking around the Express, I envisioned a unit that will satisfy the need to get out there for a single or couple. The unit also is pre-wired to accept a solar panel. There is a modest amount of storage space along with a countertop sink – which works when tapped into city water.įor entertainment there is a Bluetooth stereo and USB charging ports. Other options include a screened add-a-room that attaches at the rear of the Express, and a cassette porta potty that slides into a space under the bed. Only the optional 5,000BTU AC unit needs shore power, or plug-in to a portable generator. refrigerator, 20,000 BTU furnace, lights and the optional 5-gallon hot water heater (connected to an outside shower). It carries propane and a house battery – which between them will run the 1.7 cu. ![]() On the outside this means adding HD tires, fenders, roof rack and outside grille. The test unit I looked through at Campkin’s RV Centre was the loaded off-road version of the Express. The price reflects this simple description as the Express comes in three models from base to a better equipped off-road package. ![]() This unit is basically a box with a bed and a pop-up roof. These stats mean it can be towed by a very wide selection of vehicles you certainly don’t need a truck to haul the Express. The Express weighs in at just over 2,000 lb (loaded) and is 13-feet long. Add in the current COVID-19 restrictions and this little unit seems like it was designed more by futurists than engineers. This simple, yet unique trailer is what I’d call a mashup design somewhere between a pop-up tent trailer and a teardrop tow-behind (with a little utility trailer thrown in). Looking at the Coachmen Clipper Express, these were my thoughts. Designers and engineers seem to be plugged into current events, pop culture and social trends which they then translate into new relevant designs and concepts at a much faster clip than at any time in the past. The RV industry today pivots much quicker than it used to. Well, turns out, I can’t.īy contrast, early on in my career, I remember thinking how little trailers changed from year to year – but, again, that can’t be said anymore. So much to see in Canada.I’ve been reviewing RV’s for 25 years so you’d think that I could confidently claim to have “seen it all” by now. Whatever you choose I wish you many enjoyable escapes. Nothing destroys a vacation more then when the electrical system is DOA on park arrival or the toilet is kaput. ![]() The issues come with the fact they often start breaking not long after you leave the lot. Use it for 5 yrs and then sell it for whatever you can get for it. There is something to be said for buying cheap, especially when one has young children who are going to beat everything up (although high quality units can withstand it better). The beauty is more then skin deep with these units although the Safari Condos are very euro styling (and all aluminum skin). The downside is they all build for quality and they may not have as many dodahs in them. So possibly a used one might get close to your budget. The upside is if you could it would likely outlast you and every park you enter people who "know" will be in awe of your product - you will be able to crack lots of jokes of a love of winter camping at -25 with a straight face since a bigfoot was designed for those conditions.Ī brand new 17 escape is 26k-27k CAD. The best recommendation would be a Bigfoot but I doubt you could get one of their 17's for even close to your budget. Both Canadian manufacturers and excellent build quality infinitely superior to either of your current choices. But perhaps a touch more then that and you might be able to find either a near new 17' Escape or Safari Condo TT. At 15K I think you are aware you are buying more for price then quality. ![]()
